The best family cargo bikes in Brooklyn for 2026
A lot of Brooklyn families come in having already decided on a bike from Instagram. Most leave with a different one. The right cargo bike depends on things that don't show up in photos — how many kids, how much cargo, where you're storing it, how you feel on it. We carry all of them. Here's what we tell people.
First: front-loader or longtail?
That's the real question. Everything else follows from it. How many kids you're carrying, how much storage you have at home, and how confident you feel on a bike will all point you one way or the other.
The two main categories:
- Front-loaders (also called bakfiets) — kids ride in a box in front of you. Great visibility, very safe, but longer and heavier.
- Mid-tails and longtails — kids ride behind you on a rear rack. More compact, easier to store, but requires a bit more balance.
The front-loaders
Urban Arrow Family
The most-ridden front-loader in Brooklyn. The cargo box fits up to three kids with a padded bench, seatbelts, and a rain cover that actually keeps everyone dry. The Bosch motor handles every hill in Park Slope without breaking a sweat, and the bike is built for years of daily use — not just occasional weekends.
Best for: Families with 2–3 kids, school runs, heavy grocery loads, riders who want the gold standard.
Trade-off: It's long. You'll want to think about storage.
Urban Arrow Family Next
The current version of the Family. Same cargo box, longer-range battery, updated geometry. If you're buying new and want the latest spec — or you've ridden the original and want to upgrade — this is the one.
Best for: Families who want the newest and most refined front-loader on the market.
Trade-off: Premium price to match the premium spec.
The compact haulers
Aventon Abound LR
Where most first-time buyers start. Real cargo capability, long-range battery, and a price that doesn't require a second mortgage. If you're ready to replace car trips but not ready to spend $5k+ on a first cargo bike, this is the one to look at.
Best for: Budget-conscious families, first-time cargo bike buyers, lighter cargo needs.
Trade-off: Less refined than the Urban Arrow lineup, smaller cargo capacity.
Aventon Abound SR
The nimble one. Compact enough to fit in tight storage spots and move easily through Brooklyn traffic, while still carrying a kid and a full grocery run. If you're in a narrow brownstone hallway or an elevator building, this is where to start.
Best for: Smaller families, tight storage situations, riders who want cargo capacity without the bulk.
Trade-off: Less cargo capacity than the LR or Urban Arrow lineup.
Coming soon: Tern GSD and Quick Haul Long
We're adding two Tern models to our lineup shortly. The Tern GSD is a compact longtail that carries two passengers and a full grocery haul while fitting into a regular bike-length parking spot — a rare combination. The Quick Haul Long offers similar capability with a lighter frame. Both are good options if you want longtail flexibility without the front-loader footprint.
Which one is right for you?
You won't know until you ride one. Reading about the difference between a front-loader and a longtail is useful. Feeling it on a Brooklyn street with your kid in the box is different.
We do test rides at our space in Park Slope — free, just you and the bike. Most families figure it out pretty quickly once they're on one.
